Vol. 10 No. 1 (2021): MULTIDIMENSIONAL LITERACY IN THE KNOWLEDGE SOCIETY

View Vol. 10 No. 1 (2021): MULTIDIMENSIONAL LITERACY IN THE KNOWLEDGE SOCIETY

In the 21st century, the dichotomous notion of literacy that, in the past, distinguished between schooled and non-schooled individuals is meaningless. An informed and participatory citizenship in the knowledge society requires a multiplicity of competences that only a broader concept of literacy can encompass. Literacy can currently be seen from the perspective of functional literacy, as it focuses, not on the possession of competences, but rather on the ability to use them in solving problems and in decision-making, in the different areas of life. Every day, we all face an immensity of information (oral, written, numerical and graphic), coming from the most diverse sources and transmitted by a wide variety of means, which it is important to manage. So, everyone, regardless of their academic background, must have the necessary skills to access, process, decode and communicate that information. Intending to contribute to the scientific debate about the multidimensionality of the current concept of literacy and the competencies required for 21st century life, this dossier includes articles related to one or more dimensions of literacy in the knowledge society.
