Abstract

In populations of lizards Uta stansburiana there is a notable color polymorphism in the throats, with shades of orange, yellow and blue. These phenotypes are determined by two alleles that each correspond to one of the possible colors and follow a dominance relationship. Two models, one non-spatial and the other spatial, were developed to analyze the behavioral interactions of these phenotypes through a rock-paper-scissors game and also taking possible genotypes into account. With the non-spatial model, scenarios were found in which the three phenotypes coexisted both stably and unstably, while the results of the spatial model were close to these coexistence equilibria. There was also a strong influence of neighborhood size on the results of the spatial model, in which larger neighborhoods generated less oscillatory results and closer to the equilibrium of the non-spatial model.
