“I Wanted to Find a Way of Incorporating Artificial Intelligence into my Classes of Literary Translation, not Treating it as a Taboo, Knowing Students will use it Anyway”: A Discourse Textual Analysis of Interviews on Didactic Practices in Literary Translation

Abstract

In the context of the research project Teaching Approaches Applied in Translator Education (CAAE number 82432724.7.0000.5188), this metatext presents reflections on translation didactics developed through a discursive textual analysis of a corpus composed of ten interviews with participants who, over the past five years, have taught courses involving translation practices of literary texts. Among the topics emerging from this corpus, we have selected for this discussion those related to the conditions under which translation is taught, including contemporary concerns expressed by translation professors, with a special emphasis on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for teaching contexts. The analysis suggests that professors are concerned about the potential misuse of AI by learners – particularly in cases where learners show little interest in verifying the information provided by the AI or delegate agency and responsibility for their own learning to the tool. Among the approaches proposed to address this issue, the use of reflective journals stands out.
