Digital Critical Literacy through Machine Translation: Exploring Linguistic Variation in The Color Purple

Abstract

This article presents a didactic sequence aimed at basic education, which articulates the themes of linguistic variation, digital critical literacy, and machine translation. The proposal focuses on reading and interpreting an excerpt from The Color Purple by Alice Walker, written in African American Vernacular English (AAVE), and presentes an analysis of translations of this excerpt into Portuguese produced by freely available machine translation software. The methodology involves a comparison between the grammar of Standard English and the particularities of AAVE as a means to encourage critical reflection on translation choices and their implications. The activity allowed students to identify distinct linguistic patterns, understand the sociocultural relevance of AAVE, and develop critical analysis skills in digital contexts. The conclusion is that integrating literature, machine translation, and linguistic variation in a didactic sequence contributes to the development of readers who are more attentive to the nuances of language and the discursive practices of different communities.
