Abstract

C. S. Lewis (1898–1963), a renowned Oxford and Cambridge scholar, was one of the major literary figures of the twentieth century. This period was marked by significant changes: post-war disillusionment fostered the production of a more pessimistic literature, while new conceptions of knowledge, science, and its advances encouraged a more scientistic worldview. However, the stance adopted by authors such as C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien goes in a different direction: it contrasts with the view of fantasy as mere escapism. Based on the “three transcendentals” – Beauty, Goodness, and Truth – this article aims to analyze the potential of fantasy, as advocated by Lewis, in the process of re-enchanting the world. The research adopts a qualitative methodology of a bibliographic and analytical nature, based on an interpretative reading of the work The Abolition of Man, as well as on theoretical and critical texts concerning the philosophy and literature of Lewis and Tolkien. The analysis articulates Lewis’s philosophical thought on objective values and transcendence with the aesthetic and symbolic dimensions of his literary production, examining how fantasy can function as an instrument of mediation between reason, emotion, and imagination. It concludes that literary fantasy, far from being mere escapism or allegory, offers a richer and more complex view of human existence and its relationship with reality, remaining relevant in contemporary literary and pedagogical debates.
