Translation and Language Teaching: Old New Issues in Theory and Practice

Abstract

Grounded in the problematization of linguistic ideologies (Ochs, 1992, Mertz, 1998, Silverstein, 2003) surrounding the presumed dichotomy between translation and language teaching, the present article aims to examine the potential benefits of employing translation as a pedagogical resource in the teaching and learning of additional languages, to overcome dichotomies and attenuate the boundaries among the fields of Translation Studies, Literature, and Language Education. A pedagogical practice was reported, implemented with undergraduate students enrolled in a Teacher Education Program in Language and Literature, which involved translating Brazilian songs from Portuguese into English. The investigation focuses on the challenges and the applicability of Peter Low’s Pentathlon Principle (2017), promoting English language teaching and learning through translation. Results suggest that the activity of translating/adapting songs in English classes has the potential to engage students by incorporating their musical and linguistic repertoires, as well as by affirming their agency as active participants in the teaching–learning process. Furthermore, the practice may contribute to disrupting pre-established linguistic ideologies and entrenched pedagogical practices that often reproduce negative stigmas related to concepts deeply rooted in teachers’ imaginaries, thereby perpetuating illusory boundaries among theoretical domains that could instead, operate in a complementary manner.
