Abstract

This article is an excerpt from the master’s research “Reading and semiotics: an analysis of the social markers of difference and images of control in Portuguese language textbooks”, in which we aim to expose how the marker of race, present in textbooks from the “Weaving Languages” collection, articulates stereotypes that naturalize segregation towards the black race and support racism in the educational context. At the end of the analyses, we found that the study of stereotypes articulated through the social marker of race presented a bidirectional result in relation to the subjects involved in the teaching-learning process, demonstrating that learning and teaching about power relations established through language is the way to understand and transform realities, as well as to build an education that fights against racism and other forms of prejudice.
