Abstract

Scientific Literacy is understood as a political act that aims at the emancipation and citizenship training of students, providing them with the necessary skills to exercise their right to social practice based on the mobilization of scientific knowledge. The present study aims to map the theses indexed in the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD) that address Scientific Literacy with a focus on Science Education, defended between the years 2018 and 2022. For this purpose, the Biembengut mapping method was used. The analysis of the theses revealed that Scientific Literacy is an emerging theme in Brazilian scientific literature, with an increasing number of research projects in development. Gaucho institutions stand out in the production of knowledge on the subject, with Biology as the prevalent field of knowledge in studies, followed by the area of Health and Physics. Field research is the most used research method, and students are the main object of study. Elementary education is the most analyzed level of education, and there were no theses dealing with scientific literacy in early childhood education. The themes emerge most often in the theses analyzed are the role of teachers in the perspective of scientific literacy in Science Education and the behavior of students in the face of scientific literacy. Regarding the performance of teachers, the authors of the theses found that the initial training of teachers and the lack of provision for continued training in Natural Sciences impact teaching practice.
