‘She should be retired’: A Study of Social Markers Based on News Published by G1

Abstract

Abstract: In view of the social dystopia regarding the access and permanence of older people in higher education, this research aims to analyze the social markers of generation, profession and age through three news stories about a case of bullying and age-phobia experienced by a student over 40 and ‘still’ in higher education. We took this case as an example, given the national repercussions and as a representation of the regrettable recurring cases in Brazil. We based our research on the studies of Duarte and Silva (2023); Duarte (2023); Melo et al (2023) Collins and Bilge (2021), which deal with the social markers of difference in different contexts, as well as the possible meanings that are articulated when these markers are analyzed individually and intersectionally. The results of the analysis indicate that the situations of bullying and age-phobia present in the news analyzed are a reflection of the prejudice and negative meanings socially attributed to older people, not only because of their physical appearance, but also because they are defined as being restricted to certain social spaces or activities that are not in keeping with their ‘age’. Thus, the research makes relevant contributions to thinking of aging as a natural process of life, recognizing elderly people as beings capable of making decisions and living without the regulation of socially erected meanings about the condition of the older people.
