Abstract

Understanding how women gain space in science involves analyzing their trajectories, strategies, and identities, revealing stories of women silenced by issues of gender, race, and class. In this context, this research investigates the trajectories of female scientists in the Humanities at the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), analyzing how issues of gender, motherhood, and childhood memories shape these identities. Using a qualitative and descriptive methodology with a focus on Oral History, the study seeks to recover the memories of these women through their testimonies, contributing to the construction of an individual and collective historical awareness about the production of scientific knowledge. The data reveal that, although women represent 51% of the faculty, only 37% are actively involved in PIBIC research activities. This discrepancy highlights an unequal academic environment, where female faculty members face stigmas and obstacles in their insertion in science, both in traditionally male areas and in predominantly female sectors. Analysis of the interviews reveals a lack of recognition of women's specific needs, including the demands of motherhood and the unequal division of labor. Furthermore, participants shared experiences marked by sexism and male chauvinism, also highlighting the devaluation of their contributions to scientific production.
