Abstract

This article analyzes the relationship between literature, teaching and spaces for women empowerment. To this end, it sets out to reflect on the concept of literary curatorship and its relevance to literature teaching practices in basic education, focusing on secondary school. Even in the 21st century, literature has been a stage for traditional historiographical visions which have often kept students away from reading as a means of fruition and discovery. In view of the above, and taking Paulo Freire’s thoughts on the act of reading into account, this paper reflects on the curatorial role for the selection, suggestion and monitoring of literary works aimed at developing readership in secondary education, through which reading, speaking and listening places come to light. Thus, the study considers reconstructing the role of literary reading in the classroom insofar as it is linked to the transversality of knowledge and openness to gender and ethnic-racial issues. The results show that alternative reading spaces, associated with historically silenced speaking places, can contribute to women empowerment practices, and must consider a curatorial selection including literary works by women writers, with their diverse paths of resistance and liberation.
