An Attentive and Critical Look at the Official Statistics of Vocational Education

Abstract

This paper aimed to find elements for a reflection on the official statistics of vocational education, under an attentive and critical perspective, based on productions from four authors: Cláudio de Moura Castro, Simon Schwartzman, Gustavo Henrique de Moraes and Ana Elizabeth de Albuquerque. Although the highlighted papers do not constitute a robust literature review, this analyzes provide subsidies for reflection, in view of the characteristics, difficulties and absences of discussion of statistics related to vocational education. The theoretical framework is based on the sociology of official statistics and our main results indicates that is possible to highlight five important elements for official statistics on vocational education: the relationship with public policies; the statistics production agenda; the analytical categories; the search to verify the tendencies of dispersion or centralization of the systems and the absences and invisibilities contained in the numbers.
