Abstract

Abstract: Although it has been growing significantly in the last 10 years, it is observed that the Distance Education (DE) modality still experiences uncertainties about its quality of teaching and learning effectiveness, when compared to Face-to-face Education. Seeking to contribute to the understanding of this phenomenon, this article presents a preliminary investigation about the popular perception of DE in Brazil. An online questionnaire was prepared, containing 23 questions on demographic, socio-cultural aspects and about learning and training experiences and preferences, which was disseminated through social networks and e-mail lists. It was received the response of a total of 422 subjects, most of them from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, with academic training and full-time workers. Among the results, it was observed that there is a great interest in DE courses, and the reasons that lead a student to choose them are related to convenience, due to time restrictions related to work. In addition, it was verified that the subjects already familiar with modality become more likely to value it. Finally, the role and organization of the teacher were elucidated as fundamental in the teaching and learning process, and the absence of professional practices as the biggest limitation of the DE modality.
