Abstract

Abstract: It is a consensus that one of the objectives of science education is scientific literacy (SL), which is composed of three axes: the understanding of scientific concepts, the perception of how such knowledge is constructed and the understanding of the relations between science, technology and society. However, the challenge is to find ways to develop all these axes of SL in students. One of the ways to achieve this is through socioscientific issues (SSI) discussion activities. In this way, the objective of this theoretical work is to understand how SSI can stimulate SL in each of its three Structuring Axes. The literature indicates, in several researches, that each of the axes of SL can be developed in an activity with SSI, confirming their potential in the development of critical citizens. Examples are presented, which are representative of the diversity of activities that can be carried out with SSI, and which stimulates the axes of SL, to stimulate teachers to change their pedagogical practice and to think of ways to include SL in their classes.
