UNVEILING THE LITTLE MILKY WAY: THE SEARCH FOR EVIDENCE OF LIFE

Abstract: The article reports a didactic sequence used to motivate and develop learning about scientific notation. This study grew out of an inquiry held in a lecture: "Is there life on other planets?". This problem has motivated students to search for information about the planets of the solar system, which resulted in finding numbers expressed in scientific notation. The creation of the solar system planet models aided visualization and comparison of the sizes of the planets. The planets were built respecting a scale of one centimeter to one thousand kilometers. The data survey with students of final grades of an elementary school showed that students require to expand their knowledge about the solar system, as well, that most students believe in the existence of life on another planet. However, for intelligent life, most believe in the absence of it. The results of the didactic sequence were successful where all the students actively participated and developed informational texts, such as the models of the planets. Finally, the presentation at the county fair was one of the most visited booths that aroused the curiosity of many visitors. In this didactic sequence, the student is likely to interact with knowledge, in an active and collaborative way, aimed at a meaningful learning of the concepts explored.
