Bourdieu’s Influence on Scientific Production in the Field of Design and its Interface with Education

This research sought to map and analyze the scientific production in the area of Design that references Bourdieu’s theory in order to understand its contributions and identify whether there is an interface between this field of study and Education. To this end, a systematic review was carried out covering the period from 2000 to 2022 in Journals in the Design area classified on the Sucupira Platform in strata A1, A2, A3, A4 and B1; Theses and Dissertations from the CAPES Theses; and Dissertations Bank and Annals of the Brazilian Congress of Research and Development in Design – R&D. The survey, once the inclusion and exclusion criteria were taken into account, included two theses, 10 dissertations and 62 articles, for a total of 74 research studies analyzed. The results showed the presence of 44 concepts distributed in 200 references, with Field, Habitus, Symbolic goods, Cultural Capital and Taste as the most recurring concepts in research. The results also showed a relevant contribution of the author’s concepts to the understanding of the design area, although the number of publications was considered small for the period studied. It was possible to confirm that there is an interface between the areas of education and design under the influence of Bourdieu’s work, mostly focused on the field of design itself, and highlighting contributions aimed at the curriculum and new methodologies. The gaps are mainly focused on the potential of design in contributing to the cultural capital of subjects. There is also a need for work on the the interface between the two areas: Design and Education.
